5 Habits of the High-Performing Truckers

What makes someone a great trucker?

To be honest, great truckers aren’t born, they’re made through experience, hard work, and dedication.

The best truckers are disciplined, intelligent, and focused on getting their jobs done efficiently and safely.

With that said, these are just a few of the habits that we believe will set truckers apart from the crowd.

Disciplined sleep habits.

We’ve said it before on this blog, sleep-deprived driving is worse than drunk driving.

However, sleeping is also very important as a daily habit. You can’t actually “catch up” on sleep, you can only regulate your body.

Plus, you need 7-9 hours of sleep per night.

The best truckers are disciplined about their sleep habits because good sleep habits lead to better results and safer driving.

If you want to last and become one of the top drivers in the industry, it all starts with getting enough shut-eye each night.

Healthy eating habits.

One of the hardest parts about trucking is managing your diet while you’re on the road.

Truck stops aren’t exactly known for their healthy food, and drivers have to make an extra effort to eat well in order to have optimal performance on the job.

It’s not enough to just slam celery sticks and peanut butter and hope that you can stay focused on a 12-hour drive – you have to eat balanced meals, drink water, and be careful about your caffeine consumption.

You are what you eat. If you eat like a bad driver, you’ll be a bad driver.

Accountability.

Much of a trucker’s day is self-guided.

You have obligations of course, but if you decide to pull over and take a 6-hour nap at noon and arrive late to the rail yard, that’s on you.

The best drivers hold themselves accountable, show up when they have to and take responsibility for their actions.

People who are high-performers are accountable. Truckers are no different.

Open-mindedness.

You can’t know what you don’t know, and sometimes, you realize that you don’t know everything about trucking.

As a trucker, you have to take accountability for your actions, but it’s also crucial that you maintain an open mind so that you have the ability to learn from drivers in the industry who have more experience than you.

A growth mindset.

Good truckers hold themselves accountable. Great truckers have an open mind when it comes to criticism.

The best truckers have a growth mindset that forces them to always seek to be the best in their industry.

The best truckers are the best truckers because they want to be the best.

You don’t just stumble your way to success. Success comes from disciplined, deliberate effort, day in, day out, for years.
